Packaging Industry Commentary - the Recyclability of Black Plastic

At Richmond, we are often asked whether black plastic is recyclable. We are excited to say that, due to new developments in the industry, some black plastic is now recycable!

Until recently, black plastic was unable to be detected by infrared sensors in sorting facilities. As a result, the plastic was led to general waste. All that has changed thanks to the development of a new black pigment.

This means the plastic is now detectable by sorting machines and will no longer end up in general waste. It is estimated that an additional 2500 tonnes of plastic each year now have the potential to be sorted and recycled in the UK.

We are incredibly excited about this new technology and we now can offer this pigment throughout our range of black closures and bottles!
